Step 3. Contact your political party of choice to inform yourself, register for party membership and inquire about speaking with a female member of the party and potential mentorships. Link. You can also contact Women for 50% for assistance. Link. As far ahead as you can, begin talking to people about your ambition. Ask them whether they would consider joining the party to support you. Your potential supporters need to understand that you have one chance and one chance only to get the nomination.

Step 7. Wait for approval – once written approval is granted, the party will inform the local association (RDA). Ensure you do receive written approval, it is required for your name to stand in the Nomination Convention.
Step 8. Once you have received written approval, obtain the complete membership list from your selected party. With this list you can contact these listed individuals by telephone, mail, email, or in person. You are also able to recruit new members for a specified period of time depending on party regulations. Be sure to also to contact personal connections to your selected party. Finally, prepare a press release whether independently or through your choice political party (not obligatory but very helpful). Connect with personal connections first, then with other party members. Personal connections can also give you leads on other potential supporters.
Step 9. Identify your official representative. This step can be very independent and simple. You can act as your own official representative though this is not recommended. Your campaign manager can also be the official representative Be sure that your official representative is easily accessible.
Step 10. You are now approved as a candidate. Fill in form “Application for Registration as a Leadership Contestant or Nomination Contestant” (P 04 843). Two signatures will be required: yours and your official representative.

Step 11. Start developing your campaign team. Key is deciding who your official agent is, who your campaign manager(s) will be. Be sure they are ready and willing to accept this position and be sure that your support is in place. Begin to delegate tasks, form a game plan and prepare marketing and promotional material or seek support in developing these. Make sure you are aware of the rules regarding promotional materials.
Step 12. Ensure your supporters will attend the nomination convention. This is critical particularly if the nomination is contested.
Step 13. Ensure that your political party or RDA are issuing a media advisory and creating awareness of the nomination convention
date and location.
Step 14. The Nomination Convention – you will need to designate a scrutineer [one person] (candidate must nominate a scrutineer ahead of time to your RDA).
Step 15: Ensure you have someone at the convention to take photos of you. This can be any person you choose but not the Scrutineer.
Step 16. Check the rules on promotional materials at the Nomination Convention site and make sure the rules are respected. Make sure this is done ahead of time to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Step 17. Prepare your messages for your supporters at the Nomination Convention. This is an opportunity for riding constituents to get to know you. Prepare two speeches: one speech if you win and one for if you lose. Ensure you thank your volunteers and supporters.
Step 18. You have now been nominated as a candidate! Fill in form “Certificate of Nomination Convention” (P 04 847). This form must be signed in front of an authorized officer and commissioner of votes (legal).
