Mark your calendars!
Women for 50% invites the public to a free conference Behind the Screen — Confronting Cyberbullying and Deepfakes in New Brunswick Politics, followed by a panel discussion on Friday, October 30, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Wu Conference Centre, UNB, Fredericton.
Our featured speaker, Associate Professor Marilyn Bromberg, is Deputy Head of School (Community and Engagement) at the University of Western Australia and a practising lawyer at Janssen + Maluga Legal. She completed one of the world's first PhDs in Social Media Law in 2014 and is internationally recognized for her research in that field and in Body Image Law, including her book Body Image Law: Revolutionising Images of Thin-Ideal Women, ranked among Amazon's top 25 Health Law titles. In 2025, she was a visiting scholar at STRIPED, a research program at Harvard University's T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Boston Children's Hospital. Dr. Bromberg has presented her research on cyberbullying of politicians and political deepfakes directly to legislators across Canada and Australia, including the Nova Scotia Legislature, the New South Wales Parliament, the Parliament of Victoria, and the Queensland Parliament.
Women for 50%'s own research identifies online harassment and disinformation, including deepfakes, among the top reasons women choose not to run for office — and a leading reason many who do choose to step away. This conference is part of our ongoing work to remove barriers to women's political participation ahead of New Brunswick's 2028 provincial election, where our goal is to elect 50% women to the Legislature.
Admission is free and open to the public. Registration details will follow.
