WOMEN FOR 50% HOLDS FIRST OF EIGHT REGIONAL WORKSHOPS

  • Saint John workshop held
  • Co-chair Roxanne Fairweather unveils Women for 50% tracker
  • Additional workshops to be held in Edmundston, Campbellton, Bathurst, Shippagan, Miramichi, Moncton and Fredericton

Saint John, NB – June 22, 2017 – Today marked the first of a series of eight regional workshops hosted by Women for 50% - a group of New Brunswick leaders who have joined together to increase female participation in the 2018 Provincial election. A goal of having 50% female candidates for each political party in the upcoming 2018 election has been set and the regional workshops are part of the Group’s action plan to reach the goal.
The workshops are designed to continue to engage and educate women across New Brunswick who have demonstrated a significant interest in the topic of female representation in provincial politics and want to learn more. Since the official launch in January 2017, Women for 50% has reached thousands of followers with social media, and 400 women travelled from across the province to attend an education and networking conference the group hosted in April. The non-partisan organization is a first of its kind in Canada and has generated interest right across the country.

The workshops should be of interest to women who have decided to run for their party’s Nomination Convention or are still considering whether they wish to put their name forward and need more information.  They will provide an opportunity to hear directly from women who have lived experience going through the nomination process and have invaluable advice and perspectives to share.

Additional workshops have been confirmed for Moncton on July 12th and Miramichi on July 17th.  Further information on these and other sessions will be posted on the group’s web site at http://www.women50femmes.ca/ or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/NB.50.2018.

Workshops are being coordinated by the newly appointed Director of the Women for 50% Initiative, Norma Dubé, who brings to the Initiative years of experience in women’s equality issues provincially, nationally and internationally. Anyone who is interested in attending one of the workshops across the province or participating as a speaker is encouraged to contact her directly.
Roxanne Fairweather, Co-chair of Women for 50%, also unveiled the Group’s official Tracker which will monitor progress of the political parties in reaching the goal of 50% women candidates.  The Tracker will be updated as political parties hold their Nominating Conventions over the upcoming months and will be kept up to date on the web site.  Fairweather commented, “We measure what’s important, we track progress, and we hold the parties accountable”.

A recently-formed group, Women for 50%, is trying to make it our 2018. The group is working toward a goal of gender parity in provincial politics, encouraging each party to have an equal number of men and women on the ballot. After that, perhaps we can at least have the option of a gender equal cabinet like the Prime Minister’s.

It seems one of the biggest barriers to electing female politicians has been in having candidates who were placed on the ballot in the election rush. Aldéa Landry, a former deputy premier of New Brunswick and a Women for 50% founder, told CBC “[i]t’s like throwing them to the wolves,” pushing unprepared women into election races.

"The goal of Women For 50% is to have women make up half of the candidates running for each party in the 2018 provincial election. As of 2017, eight of 49 MLAs are women, that’s just 16 per cent and lower than previous year.

Co-chair Roxanne Fairweather said for her, the need to push for gender parity started in 2014 when she attended the opening of the legislature under the, then new, Gallant government."

"Back in 1977, former New Brunswick deputy premier and business woman Aldéa Landry  remembers  more women starting to join federal and provincial politics, but the numbers were not where they needed to be.

Forty years later, one may think things have greatly improved and that more women are running and being elected in Canada than ever before. But Landry says that’s not the case in New Brunswick. In fact, she says the numbers are quite similar to those in the mid-seventies.

Currently the New Brunswick legislature has 16 per cent female representation."
